A Few Notes About Me
Welcome to my website! My name is Mme Jenny and I am a music specialist working in a Canadian elementary school. This year (2015-16) my teaching assignment will be Grade 2-4 Music as well as Grade 2 French Language Arts, Visual Arts, and Daily Physical Activity. I run three levels of choirs (prep, junior & senior) for students and an Orff ensemble during our lunch hours. Students in Grades 2-4 perform at the local music festival and at school concerts. I am also the co-creator and co-facilitator of the PEMAC Program (Physical Education Musical Arts and Culture Program) which is an experiential learning program that blends physical education, music, fine arts, and cultural experiences with other curriculum areas in order to support students in mastering 21st Century competencies. A link will be posted soon with more information about this unique program.
When I was young I wanted to be a pilot or an astronaut. Unfortunately, I never managed to meet the height requirements for either career. The only person in my family who knew for sure that I would grow-up to become a music teacher was my grandmother. She declared it when she bought me my first piano at age 3. After many years of piano lessons I eventually expanded my horizons to playing the flute, oboe, trombone, folk harp, guitar, recorders and basically any instrument I could get my hands on. My first love is singing and I hold a Bachelor of Music Degree in Opera, as well as Post-Bacc. Studies in Voice Performance, Orff Schulwerk Certification to Level 3, Kodaly Level 1 and a Bachelor of Education Degree. I am currently working towards my Masters Degree in Music Education which I plan to complete by April 2016, and I hope to go on to Doctoral Studies. In my 'spare' time I enjoy performing in community musical theatre or singing with chamber choirs. I also provide individual and small group vocal coaching to my local Boys' Choir and I plan to start a small Voice studio in the next few years. Occasionally I present music and literacy sessions at Teachers' Conventions. In the future I think I might enjoy working with pre-service teachers at the post-secondary level.
In my elementary music classes I teach using the Kodaly and Orff Approaches. Developing students' musical literacy, fostering their self-confidence and nurturing their natural love of music are my goals. Learning is a lifelong process, and we are most satisfied in our learning experiences when we have felt successful in reaching our goals. Teaching children from a very young age to be self-efficient, self-directed, and self-actualized learners is something that will serve them for a lifetime. Nurturing children’s inherent curiosity, recognizing and developing their intrinsic motivation, and helping them reach their full potential should be the goal and the reward of all educators. A link to my short film about the importance of Music Education is also below in both French and English. Thank you for your interest in my webpage and for supporting quality Music Education.
